Are you familiar with the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and other ocean plastic accumulations? They're horrible, and reading about the subject is as essential as the photos are heartbreaking.
Part of the problem
We are well aware that we are part of the worldwide problem through goods production and consumerism. We do not take this lightly, and we want to do our part to reduce our footprint as much as possible.
This year, as part of our VC Green Program initiatives, we have committed to reducing our internal waste and introducing more recycled/biodegradable packaging solutions.
We have also vastly expanded the number of our products made from post-consumer recycled plastics.
How many bottles?
When we re-engineered our Blue line to include recycled FlexLight, we asked ourselves (and our trusted fabric engineers!), "How many bottles are in each piece of VC apparel?"
The weight of a single PET bottle (polyethylene terephthalate bottle) is around 40-50 grams, and there is about 10-20% waste in the recycling process. Calculating based on a medium-sized apparel piece, and using a waste assumption of 15%, the result is 38 grams of recycled yarn per bottle.
What does this mean?
Here's the breakdown of how many plastic bottles are in each piece of sublimated VC apparel:
- Classic short sleeve = 5 bottles
- Classic long sleeve = 7 bottles
- Tank = 4.3 bottles
- Raglan short sleeve = 5 bottles
- Raglan long sleeve = 7.3 bottles
- Revolution hoodie = 8 bottles
- Ripper quarter-zip long sleeve = 7 bottles
- Classic shorts = 3.5 bottles
