Raising Trans Awareness: Surge vs NYGL
This blog post is written by Emma Soiles, a professional ultimate player competing with the Philadelphia Surge in the Premier Ultimate League's 2023 season.
I started playing sports when I was 4 years old. I self-described myself as an athlete at 6. At 8, I joined my first competitive sports team. For me to live a life without sport, is to live a hollow one. I cannot imagine not having some sort of team sport outlet in my life. Fighting together to overcome the opposition. Building community and developing bonds. All such integral parts of the human experience.
Now is the time for vocal and public solidarity.
Unfortunately, a wave of right-wing rhetoric has sprung up to deny people the opportunity to engage with their community for the simple fact of existing. Trans people are being targeted by local and state legislatures across the country. Whether or not we have access to medication, allowed to use bathrooms, ‘perform’ in public, dress the way we want to dress and if we are allowed to play sports. These bills are draconian and misogynistic. Now is the time for vocal and public solidarity.
The PUL has done a fantastic job creating a welcoming environment for trans athletes and upholding their value of inclusion. It is our hope that the rest of the Ultimate community joins us. The Philadelphia Surge and New York Gridlock have jointly agreed to host a fundraiser at our season opener on April 8th. Players will all be wearing trans flag wristbands before the game and we will be fundraising for GALAEI, which is a radical social justice organization local to Philadelphia. Wristbands will be sold at the game with all proceeds being donated to GALAEI.
About GALEI Galaei is a Queer and Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (QTBIPOC) radical social justice organization. Continuing to serve the Latinx community, while widening our embrace, Galaei provides and facilitates Queer educational services, community wellness, and is committed to healing historical harm. Galaei is dedicated to creating access, opportunities, sexual empowerment, and economic development for all QTBIPOC individuals while fighting systemic oppression, structural racism, discrimination, and white supremacy.
