2019 Ultimate Canada Conference
The Ultimate Canada Conference (UCC) is a wonderful professional development opportunity for ultimate organizers to network, discuss programming and shape the future direction of Ultimate Canada. With so many ultimate enthusiasts in one location, it is a great chance to learn about administrative best practices, programs across the country, and much more.

The 2019 UCC took place in Québec City on November 15-17. This year's theme was Community Engagement and Development.
Since I joined the VC team less than a year ago, this would be my first UCC, and I didn’t really know what to expect. But with 100 participants, 15 speakers and over 40 organizations represented I was really excited to be part of it!
We had the privilege of hosting Tiina Booth as the keynote speaker for the event. Tiina is noted for her contributions to creating and implementing the template for the development and support of youth ultimate. From the Amherst Invitational to school clinics to the National Ultimate Training Camp (NUTC), Tiina built a foundation of youth ultimate in the Northeast that has been replicated throughout the U.S.A.
Tiina shared how it all started: at the time, there was no sport offerings for women other than cheerleading. The first players recruited were the ones who would take too long to pack up their things to leave the classroom (she was a teacher). Before they were able to hold tryouts as we know them today, the players sent VHS tapes of themselves in an attempt to make the team!
In her Introduction to Mental Resilience session, Tiina highlighted the importance of focusing on the process and not the outcome. It’s important to stay in the moment to perform at your best capacities. We reviewed a few principles like which part of your brain you should use and when, the different types of nervousness and the various uncontrollables that can throw you off your game.
Alison Fisher also led a session about our favourite topic at VC: The Spirit of the Game.
During that weekend, I met so many people from so many cities in our country. These are hard-working and passionate people who all have the same goal of growing ultimate even more. I was grateful to learn about all the different realities and challenges of various organizational levels, and it was inspiring to see the same enthusiasm and determination in every single individual.
I’m excited to see what the future will bring, and I look forward to attending next year’s UCC in Ottawa!
